The climax takes place when the heroine betrays her anti-government group/her friends and tells her lover to run. This leads to her execution, costing all of her friends' lives, sentenced by her lover. Knowing the history, this is an ironic ending because her lover must have been executed after the war for working for Japanese army.
At the last minute, she chose her love over her ideal, patriotism and her friends while her love let her die, feeling betrayed.
