I just want to reiterate the notion of studying works in a genre. I took McKee's advice on this when I first saw him in 2003, and taking a film apart, scene by scene, pausing it and actually writing down the purpose of the scene and how it turns and what it does for the story, is extremely helpful. It is, I think, the single most effective exercise I've ever undertaken in order to comprehend the craft.
