... There are three English languages! Subtexts of American, English (plus Scottish and Welsh) or Australian reflect their own insecurities. Do you want to appeal to Americans or the British? And remember 'translation is the enemy'.

I'm translating one of my sitcoms into French (myself) and while I think the story is European and particularly French I will probably need a Frenchie - I think a director rather than another writer - to interpret, not translate.

Naturally, culturally there are perceptions that simply don't translate or transpose so you have to rewrite those completely (a good discipline perhaps).

On the other hand I am also in the subtext writing in a way to alarm French audiences into seeing aspects of their on foibles so there are beats in which that I will challenge a foreign audience to imagine or conclude.
