What Robert McKee is doing on Storylogue is very similar to what some of the old classic English literature profs such as Mark Van Doren would do at schools like Columbia University for their undergrads. Grad school was reserved for specialization once you'd had a heavy dose from a wide menu in undergrad.

(I hope Mr. McKee isn't fulminating or fuming while reading this).

The days though of teaching for the sake of teaching, without regard to some ridiculous imperative to publish, is almost extinct in the university and college system.

Writers who can teach well are very rare and it is a very applied art, which is why there's so much emphasis here on really working through a great piece of screen art.

From my experiences in university, I feel that academics don't teach you how to DO it, but only how to TALK about it.

I just graduated college and I know I'm happy I didn't go to grad school. I think what McKee says in "STORY" about there being a lot buried treasure by noting what happens in a movie is very true. I go through as many movies as I can, note every scene; I'll read the script and watch the movie. This has given me worldss of insight! And I would never, never, never expect a college professor to suggest such a good method of study.

Page 89 in "STORY" is very empowering to someone who is looking to do study on their own.
