This is a brilliant answer, although I would opine that Campbell's monomyth is in fact a word and concept borrowed from Joyce's "Finnegans Wake", one of the world's greatest comedic masterpieces. Campbell's first book was a work on FW.

I'm glad Bob McKee discussed this. I've met lots of people who've read Campbell's books on myth, but never actually read Greek Myths. If you would like to see what can be done with a lifetime of study of Greek Myths in novel form check out CS Lewis's most underrated novel Till We Have Faces. A remarkable book.

When I saw this Q&A listed in the Storylogue Newsletter, I got pumped.  Though I could never slog all the way through Campbell's work, I did make it through Vogler's paring down of it. 

I bought into it, when I began to see it play out in so many movies, TV shows and books.  Maybe I was just tripping on caffeine.  I tend to.

However, when I began to use it myself, portions of it (certain stages) felt forced in some story writing situations.  I'm now guessing those places were non-action places.  I need time to reflect.

Great question.  I'm glad it was asked.  Very insightful answer, not only on monomyth, but on Campbell and Greek myths.  Okay, back to my first pot of coffee.
