Goodfellas is about a bunch of guys in the Mafia who are having a great time stealing from suckers. The Ray Liotta character, the protagonist, never essentially changes from beginning to end.
Both movies were well done and enjoyable but the Godfather dealt with more fundamental values and included a more profound change in the protagonist.
Timelessness is related to the depth of values involved and the amount of change in the protagonist.
