Nanette: Preparation is 3/4 the work- implimentaion is the other 1/4

That was a lot of usable information- experience is the best teacher. I have to remember to stick to the kiss theory- stay in the correct hemopshere of my my mind- follow the worn path- be only a writer and show some class. Lol. Thanks once more for a great lesson.

Marius: How to "protect" an idea?

Another question:
How does you "protect" your idea or pitch? You can register a script. But how does it work with the idea you pitch? Is there any sort of copyright?

Thank you for all your kind comments and I'm glad you found the lecture enjoyable. Behind the scenes: The day we taped this, I told Bob I brought some notes and may need a few breaks to get it all done. I took one breath and never stopped. I was honored to be able to do it for Bob McKee, who has been a great influence not only on my work, but my attitude towards it.

You got it right. If they "buy" your show that means you go under contract to write the pilot and are paid for each step you complete. That way you're not working on what we call "spec," which is essentially writing for a hope and a prayer, plus it involves them in what they call the "development" process and invests them creatively and emotionally in the project.
