KaiserSozay: Length—as long as it needs to be!

I am amazed to read members of your audience recommending you shorten your videos. This is ridiculous. Why? Because your content is behind a paywall, it's NOT like youtube. People willing to pay aren't looking to for entertainment for enlightenment.

My two cents: Make your videos as longs as they need to be, as determined by your own teacher's judgement.

Thank you Mr McKee for being a superb teacher.

Thanks for the lessons, Mr McKee, I've learned a whole lot of great stuff and have been able to apply it to my ownstory to fix the problems with my story.

I hope we'll be able to purchase a DVD copy of the lessons at some point

Thanks for all the hard work you put into these great lessons

I read Mr. McKee the comments regarding the length of the lessons.

He finds that the comments are well thought out and well written.

We will continue to find the good balance.  Thank you, Mia
SCSaunders: The Interwebs Video is a Genre

Just some food for thought.  May not change anyone's opinion; but might present a new perspective.

If you've ever done video regularly for the web, like for youtube, you discover real quick via hit/view counts that it has it's own conventions, its own audience expectations.  It is a genre of video.

One major expectation/convention is duration. Tutorials for web video software, like Camtasia Studio <<http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp>> will confirm this.  Experience will confirm this.  Longer videos are watched by a smaller audience.  It's just the nature of people viewing video on the web.  The web is not the local theater.  It is not a lecture hall.

However, where this perspective may fall apart is on a specialty or niche site such as this.  The audience is different.  It has an educational expectation that hungers for large helpings from one Robert McKee.

So, applying what I learned from Robert McKee's book, deciding between web-genre audience expectations and Storylogue audience expectations, we may have the dilemma of two irreconcilable goods. Add to this that Storylogue, as a business, would like to reach an ever expanding audience, well . . . .

Thank you ALL for your support!! We will be more aware/sensitive of where we cut in the future.

It is wonderful to know that our writers are actually watching and paying attention.

I think with the problem with it being too short is that it's too good and too hooking-- Mckee announcing that this is the granddady-of-them-all character design, taking ten minutes to introduce it and then cutting out is what makes it so frustrating (and seem so unsatisfying). We know it'll be another whole week before we'll see him again.

I think: Look for a place where the viewer would be satisfied enough, have enough food for thought, then cut it.

Hello Miles, I am glad to hear that you find the lesson too short - because we have members also saying that the lessons are too difficult to watch for too long.

So, we are still trying to find a good balance.

Thank you. Mia

If Sigmund were to get wind of this, he'd not just roll over but rather spin in his grave!  Regardless, I really enjoyed this.  The only criticism I could level at the lesson is that it was only 10+ minutes in duration and delved only as deep as the two levels of "outer characterization"...but, then, perhaps I've just been hooked : )  I look forward to the next session!

this is too hard. I think I'll write video games instead.
