Zodiac wasn't about catching the killer-- like all of Fincher's movies, it's about the idea that life is a frustrating, grief-stricken affair that usually amounts to little. Life ends with death, in other words. Yet -- there's nobility to be found in the pursuit: The Morgran Freeman character going back to the police force at the end of "Seven", the Ruffalo character telling Graysmith to continue writing the book despite both of their failures in capturing the Zodiac.
