for me part of it may be lack of empathy. I just didn’t care whether or not a planet full of soul-dead pseudo-philosophers lived or died. they were already dead in spirit.
what makes Spock interesting is his mixed-race conflicted soul.
there was a TOS episode in which Kirk had to make Spock angry to rid him of spores and Kirk did so by among other things calling him a traitor from a race of traitors. when I was a child I thought it was just something Kirk made up to make Spock mad. but now I know he was speaking the truth. the Vulcans are a race of traitors. to themselves.
